Meet Our Founder
Torin Golding is the first builder, owner, Urban Prefect, and Consul of ROMA. He joined SL in 2005 and almost immediately set about designing an ancient Roman-themed land. This grew into ROMA. He has a background in Roman culture, history and archaeology. He retired from his Consulship in 2015. He is now considered a private Citizen of ROMA.
ROMA is the original Roman land in SL. It began in 2005 as a quarter-sim (simulator) plot on the SL Mainland Linda sim. On the Ides of March 2006, ROMA opened as its own island. New lands were then added to ROMA enlarging the estate.
In March of 2007, ROMA got a residental sim added where Citizens could build their own Roman houses. It was called ROMA Subura.
Later that year, at the ROMA @ I celebrations, Torin annouced a further addtion to the estate, ROMA Transtiberim, a primarily rural sim that also housed headquarters for many of ROMA's most active groups.
In 2008, an ocean sim, named ROMA Maritima, was acquired for sailing and swimming, as well as a private island retreat for the emperor, ROMA Imperium. The next year, ROMA Imperium was renamed ROMA Insula and rented out to ROMA Citizens.
In 2010, three more sims were affixed. ROMA Atalante (later renamed ROMA Diania) was citizen-owned but opened to the public. ROMA Vinovium and ROMA Vicus were purchased by the Binchester Roman Fort Archaeological Project (Stanford University/Durham University/Durham County Council) and are an educational reconstruction of the Roman fort and civilian settlement at Binchester in the UK.
In 2014-15, some major changes came to ROMA: ROMA Vinovium was re-purposed to house the Collegia Religio Romana and provide a new ocean for the estate, ROMA Maritima, ROMA Vicus, and ROMA Diania were removed, and the Binchester Roman Fort build was moved to ROMA Transtiberim - where it became the headquarters of the Legio XIII.
